Our Mission

To foster the careers of underrepresented minority surgeons through professional development to become leaders in American Surgery.

The Society of Black Academic Surgeons Foundation (SBASF) was founded with the goal of fostering the careers of junior and mid-career minority faculty so that they can attain the rank of Professor of Surgery and leadership positions within health systems across the United States. The SBASF will supplement the mission of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons by stimulating academic excellence, encouraging scholarship, and supporting professional development of underrepresented minority surgeons so that they will achieve these goals. This effort will consist primarily of providing opportunities to facilitate academic promotion of junior and mid-career faculty surgeons, sponsoring education scholarships to prepare faculty to be leaders in the healthcare industry as well as guiding faculty towards leadership positions in surgery. The Foundation will also provide funding for research for surgeons in training in order to ensure they start early in attaining the academic excellence which is a prerequisite for leadership in academic surgery. Support our mission »

Targeted Efforts

  1. Offer opportunities to enhance junior and mid-career minority faculty academic promotion in surgery such as a SBAS Diversity Visiting Professorship Program.
  2. Career development to enhance junior and mid-career minority faculty promotion into healthcare leadership positions enabling members to attend formal courses, receive executive coaching, and obtain experiential training for leadership.
  3. Offer opportunities that encourage surgical research activities for surgeons-in-training such as a SBAS Research Fellowship Grant

Planned Giving

For over 30 years, the Society of Black Academic Surgeons has been at the forefront of medical education, research and mentorship for minority surgeons. This Foundation will serve as the philanthropic arm of the Society of Black Academic Surgeons and assist the Society in its academic, educational, and mentorship missions. The planned giving program will enhance the Foundation’s capability to meet its endowment needs with a focus on promoting the careers of junior and mid-career surgeons.
