The Program Committee for the 20th annual Scientific Assembly of The Society of Black Academic Surgeons invites the submission of abstracts for the April 2010 meeting in Durham, North Carolina.
Abstracts are limited to 500 words and must include the title, authors and institution. The body of the abstract should include Background, Objective or hypothesis, methods, results and Conclusions. Tables and graphs are permitted and will not count against the word limit. Abstracts should be original work not previously published or presented and not currently under review for presentation or publication. Updates, follow-up, or additional definition of previous work is permitted. Abstracts should be authored, co-authored or sponsored by an SBAS member. Abstracts will undergo blind peer review by the program committee. Topics may be in the areas of basic science, clinical surgery, or outcomes analysis and should be of interest to the general membership. Selection will be based on the following criteria: originality, scientific merit, study design, clarity of experimental data, and adherence to the rules of submission. Abstracts not selected for paper presentation will automatically be considered for poster presentation. Because of time constraints there will be a limit of 2 abstracts per author accepted for paper presentation, however no limit to the number of poster submissions. Paper presentations will be limited to 10 minutes followed by a 5 minute discussion period.
Abstract submission by medical students and residents are encouraged and will be eligible for The Claude Organ Resident Paper Competition. Abstracts should be identified for this category at the time of submission. There is a cash prize for the winner.
A poster session and rounds with the professor will be held on Saturday April 4 from 7 – 8 am. Posters should be no larger than 4’ x 6’ and formatted for a display board. Posters should be hung prior to the poster session and presenters are expected to be present to discuss their work, which includes a 3-minute presentation and 2-minute question and answer.
Abstract submission begins September 1, 2009. The deadline for abstract submission will be January 15, 2010.
The Program Committee will meet in January. All authors will be notified of the status of their abstracts via e-mail by early February 2010, with details to follow via email.
Authors of both papers and poster may submit a complete manuscript at the meeting to the Publications Committee. Manuscripts must conform to the Guide for Authors of the American Journal of Surgery, Submission of manuscripts is not required, but is encouraged.
